Duca Wins State Wrestling Title; Bombers Place Fifth

Jad Duca defeated Division I Army's Brian Rowan for the title.
Oswego, N.Y. -- Senior Jad Duca (South Brunswick/Monmouth Junction, N.J.), seeded third at 157 pounds, defeated Army's Brian Rowan (seeded fourth) for the state championship. Duca is the first Bomber to claim the state championship since Carlos Restrepo in 2001. Duca posted four straight decisions on the way to his title, including two over Division I opponents (Rowan and Columbia's Tyler Thurgood).

As a team, the Bombers finished fifth at the tournament, which features schools from Division I, II and III and junior colleges. Ithaca was the top team from Division III, finishing ahead of Cortland by one point. The Bomber's fifth-place finish was their best since recording consecutive fifth-place efforts in 1992 and 1993.

Seven Bombers beat Division I wrestlers, including junior Nick Calandrino (Emerson/Emerson, N.J.), who is seeded fourth at 197 pounds, senior Brian Lockard (Upper Dublin/Dresher, Pa.), senior Macario Alvarez (Grapevine/Grapevine, Texas), senior Lance Dolson (Valley Central/Walden), senior Robert Stubbs (Levittown/MacArthur), who is seeded third at 184 pounds, Duca and junior Matthias Keib (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton), seeded fourth at 174 pounds. Keib is ranked fourth nationally in Division III.

Five Bombers apart from Duca placed in the top eight, earning all-state honors. Calandrino, Keib and Stubbs (who is ranked fifth nationally in Division III) each placed third in their respective weight classes. Keib defeated second-seeded (and first-ranked nationally in Division III) Stef Sair of Cortland in the third-place bout, while Stubbs defeated Division I Cornell's Mike Mackie to appear in the third-place bout. Calandrino finished his afternoon with consectuive wins over Division I wrestlers by fall and major decision. Lockard placed fourth at the 165 weight class, after defeating second-seeded Jacob Blowers of Division I Buffalo on Friday. Dolson recorded his first two falls of the season in the consolation bracket at 141 pounds, and went on to place seventh with a win over Divison I Army's Lief Gilsdorf.

Stubbs, who is ranked fifth nationally in Division III, recorded the 93rd win of his career, tying Kent Maslin (1990-94) for 15th on Ithaca’s all-time list. Duca raised his career record to 83-31; he moves past  Dan Butler (1995-99) and Chris Matteotti (1991-95) for 19th.

The top eight finishers in each weight class earn all-state honors.
